Jewellery Facts
Practically every diamond sold across the counter winds up in a piece of jewellery, a bit of handy work that embodies precious gems, precious metals and someone’s design and craftsmanship.Jewellery is an art form we can hold and wear, like many of the arts jewellery design and jewellery making are a combination of traditions that goes back through untold generations of craftsman and artisans. It embodies the accumulated learning of generations of metal workers, designers and stone cutters. The mainstay of diamond jewellery is the wedding set. The tradition of a ring given as a token of betrothal originates way back in 1477 when the Arch Duke Maximillian of Austria and Mary of Burgundy became engaged. The Arch Duke chose a diamond ring to mark the occasion and so the tradition began.Another interesting fact is that early Egyptians believed the vein of love (vena amoris) runs directly from the heart to the top of the third finger on the left hand and so another tradition began.Jewellery is the ultimate gesture of our love, desire and affection.
